Writing is hard.

So I updated [info - personal] unfitforsociety instead, with 15 recs for November 2009:

* 3 Supernatural
* 3 crossovers
* 2 White Collar
* 2 Harry Potter
* 2 Star Trek Reboot
* 1 each Big Bang Theory, Dark Angel, and Psych

Every time I listen to the Black Keys, I wonder why they haven't been used on SPN yet (if they were, I missed it). Dean could shock Sam by listening to something that was produced after 1979, but that still sounds like it came from the early '70s. Heh.

Happy birthday, Lady of Asheru! [29 Nov 2009|07:05am]

mirabile_dictu
xposted to IJ and LJ

It's already afternoon in England, so let me post before it's too late: happy birthday to my beloved Lady of Asheru! I wish she didn't live so far away.

Every year for her birthday I write a little story, so here is this year's. It is not the most appropriate of birthday gifts, I don't think -- for one thing, it's set after a favorite character has died. Great. My dear non-LJ friend Linda has given me a new rule: no deaths when writing stories for gifts. I will try to keep that in mind in the future.

But this year, this is what it is.

Title: Survived Their Fall
Fandom: SG1 and SGA
Pairing: Daniel Jackson/Jack O'Neill; Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 2,525
Summary: Daniel spent a lot of time not looking at what he was packing because every object and every book reminded him of Jack and their years together.

A/N: For the Lady of Asheru on the occasion of her birthday.

Warning: Major character death.

Word count: 3,466. Thank god, only two more days in this month and I can knock off this word count shit. Although I must say, feeling obligated to post did keep my word count up, and I'm very proud of what I did today.

I got another email address, mirabile1dictu@gmail.com (note the "1" in the middle of Mirabile Dictu; that's because someone else has mirabile.dictu and mirabiledictu. Goddammit), so I could have a Google Wave account. Now, what does one do with a Google Wave account? Thanks to Winkingstar, I know a tiny bit more than I did; she linked to this two minute video explanation. Wave as a "hosted conversation" -- see, that makes sense to me.

I currently have 86 g-wave invitations, so if you want one, please email me: mirabile1dictu@gmail.com.

stove shopping [28 Nov 2009|09:05pm]

[ mood | calm ]

we decided to replace our stove...but soon found that finding an ADA Compliant (disability accessible) free standing stove in our price range was not doable. Actually the disability access requirement was so basic we were surprised we couldn't find it: we needed the oven controls on the front of the stove not on the back. from there, we needed it to be a freestanding gas range. it needed a glass window so I could look inside without opening the door. and it needed to have burners that were closed so food would not fall into the flames.

slide in stoves have all the controls on the front but no backsplash. Our stove is freestanding so it needs built-in a backsplash/rim (as well as side panels - most slide in stoves don't offer these as optional add-ons). This put us in the price range of real cheap stoves (no glass doors with open burners and doors with flimsy knobs) and the real expensive stoves. in the end it came down to 4 models and 4 models only. I ended selecting the higher end one because it had continuous grate burners (across the entire top of the stove) which meant I could slide the pots on and off the burners while seated in a wheelchair.

And all the while I kept thinking... I don't really need an accessible stove - it's not like I am in a wheelchair every day. before the practical side reminded me: yet. your hip went out earlier in the year.

We did consider repairing but I already was having problems with some of the broken controls on the old stove and it was impossible to clean and for a while the only setting it had was 'Scorch!!". The broken igniter just pushed it over the edge.

The uploading continues apace. I am almost ready to stop for the evening and maybe try to write. Or something. I miss writing. It's been days since I did any. Sigh.

I was uploading a lot of the codas I wrote in season 2, when I was still in the first flush of fandom love, and wow, season 2 was good for codas. I think I wrote at least one (sometimes more than one) for almost every episode. I miss that, too.

*

Tonight for dinner I made a roast loin of pork. It was very tasty. I combined garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, and basil in about a tablespoon of olive oil (for easy spreading), along with a couple of teaspoons of brown sugar and a large splash of vanilla (for years, I wouldn't tell my mother about the brown sugar and vanilla, and she couldn't replicate the taste. Heh.). Rub that on, top with a few pats of butter, and then cook until the internal temperature is 160°F. It was very tasty and juicy and good.

My subconcious is a strange place [28 Nov 2009|03:59pm]

darkrose
Dreamed last night that I'd uploaded a bunch of fic to AO3. I was disappointed when I woke up this morning and it wasn't true, because I'm lazy that way.

I also dreamed about the fic that's been percolating in my head for a few days now. I want to take the "John and Rodney get stranded on a planet that practices slavery" tropes and make it about John and Ronon, but I don't want to use the idea that Ronon has to be the owner because you have to fight hand-to-hand if anyone challenges you for your slave. Not that I have a problem with that trope, but it's been done, and done well; I want to do something different.

So my idea is that this particular world was used for genetics research by the Ancients, and about 10% of the population has the ATA gene. After the Ancients left, the gene carriers, called the Gifted, established an oligarchy where they ruled, sometimes as benevolent dictators, and at other times, not so benevolent. About a hundred and fifty years before the Atlantis expedition, the non-Gifted rebelled. They didn't kill or exile all of the Gifted, though, because they needed them to work much of the technology, so instead, they enslaved them. All adult Gifted are "bonded" to a person referred to as a Keeper, whose job is to make sure that the Gifted does his assigned tasks without exceeding the boundaries.

Somehow, John and Ronon get stranded on this planet, and Ronon has to be John's Keeper. In addition to John letting his submissive side out, and Ronon discovering that he likes being the one giving orders to John, I want to look a little at Ronon's conflicted feelings toward the Lanteans, and both of them realizing where the Lanteans' attitudes of patronizing superiority to the rest of the Pegasus Galaxy could be heading.

Of course, I've got to finish my Podbang fic--at least, once I get the replacement for the microphone Ogdred used as a chew toy--and figure out what I'm doing for [info - livejournal.com] prettylightsfic, and I haven't had much writing drive lately. But we'll see...maybe next year if there's an SGA Big Bang I'll try to do something, if only because there's not enough Ronon/John fic out there.

chickens and things [28 Nov 2009|12:57am]

Someone on LJ reviewd Sauna not too long ago. I can't remember who, but at that recommendation I put it on my queue and watched it last night and man was it creepy. It earned several really good jumps and squeals from me, and was just in general a creepy flick. I can't say I understood everything about it, but I don't feel like that matters somehow. Trailer! )

In not-film news: Pie a success! It was delicious, although, as I had originally planned on a different recipe, I had no ginger and substituted it with half the amount of cloves, which was a bit strong but not bad. This time (I'm making a second pie for a Thanksgiving #2 tomorrow with the Captain's family) I was prepared with ginger and added a bit of vanilla for the fun of it, and (again, though I haven't tasted the finished product) I think this one's going to be even better! And I had a cup of potatoes leftover so I made cookies... but they are simultaneously veryvery boring and a bit over-spiced. Perhaps some icing will help them out.

Oh, and I just ended boiling the potatoes both times. It's a time-saver!

Unrelated, we got our hen today. More for the hen-curious! )

body chemistry for the lose... [27 Nov 2009|08:42pm]

So yeah, because my sleep schedule's been so fucked up, I haven't been taking my Wellbutrin. I really really need to remember that it's not optional.

Dinner tonight, which should have been dinner last night, was good, but it was only half of what I meant to serve and the meat was just a little too pink even though my meat thermometer said it was a lot more done that it turned out to be.* I really didn't feel the cooking vibe so we had the caramelized butternut squash/sweet potato dish (which was very good) and lamb, which was very good even if it was a little pink. We'll have greens and mashed potatoes tomorrow.

Things would have been a lot smoother if I'd been taking my meds, as it was I stressed this one waaaaaay too much.

*Um, hi...I'm really not in the mood for recommendations or helpful hints or solutions or whatever here.

backpage news down in the neighborhood [27 Nov 2009|11:40pm]

[ music | Boom Boom Boom - the Iguanas ]

I don't really care about so much about the plots on White Collar. They just keep giving me tasty OT3 stuff and I'm content.

I've spent most of the day uploading stuff to the AO3. It allows me to feel productive when I can't write. I have too many goddamn stories, though. [info - personal] angelgazing pointed out that I will never be done uploading because I write faster than I upload. Though possibly this is no longer the case. I don't know. I have been having my usual late autumn/early winter problems getting motivated. Since the archive takes so long to upload, I am also rereading some favorite stories (I don't have to pay as close attention to rereads - I can skim and skip and be interrupted without losing anything, 'cause I've already read them before). I keep getting errors, unfortunately, which is slowing things down even more.

Technology is not my friend.

I know lots of people are excited by tagging their stories in all sorts of ways, but I am doing what I find useful and that's it. As long as I get the characters/pairing on there, and maybe if it's a casefile or an episode tag, that's about the extent of my interest. Maybe if I upload my HP stuff, I'll split the Remus/Sirius out by era, like I have it in my tags on LJ, but mostly I don't care about the tags. *hides*

Also, I wish there were a place in the profile to link to a warnings policy, and that that link could just automatically be included on every story. Because I am just using the "No Primary Warnings Apply" which isn't the same as "no warnings needed" but 99% of my stuff is "no warnings needed" and I'd like to be able to say that somewhere, since it isn't a choice on the warnings field. I guess I could make it a tag, but I never think of it. I wish it were automatic.

Hmm...

If there's interest in a Dreamwidth mirror, please let us know. :)

Neither of us are judging people who are interested in Sanctuary incest fic, but, from what we've heard around the fandom, there's definitely a desire for a place where people won't run into that.

[ music | Giants v. Broncos on tv ]

Happy Thanksgiving to those who are celebrating! Happy Thursday to those who are not. I hope everyone had a lovely day, regardless.

My day began with BACON and PIE and ended with FOOTBALL and PIE, and in between there was stuffing and homemade cheese macaroni and turkey that was actually moist and tasty (!!), and more family shenanigans than you could shake a stick at. My brother was in rare form tonight, and basically had the whole table in stitches for most of the meal. Mostly at my expense, but eh, that's not new. and unfortunately, the Giants are capping off the day by sucking like unto a hoover, but I am too full and sleepy to care too much.

I am thankful for my family, my friends - including you guys - my health, and my job. Man, a year ago at this time, I was a week away from being laid off. I'm still a little freaked out by how that went, still anxious and lacking in confidence sometimes, but I'm so glad I found a new job quickly, and one that I mostly like, for people and an organization that I like. (I'm also grateful that I have tomorrow off and I don't have to use a day - it's one of our holidays. Mmm...sleeping in...) I'm grateful I have health insurance and can pay my rent and that I have an apartment I love.

I'm thankful for fandom, not just because of all the great stories to read and the feeling of having people who get my excitement about various shows and characters, but because of all the great people I've met and become friends with, who've made my life richer and better and more fun all around.

*hugs*

And also, I am thankful for PIE, and I would share some with you all if I could.

Cooking Triumphant [26 Nov 2009|06:12pm]

We had our aging stove cleaned on Tuesday in advance of Turkey day. It worked fine last night....but this evening the gas is no longer flowing into the oven. Gas Bar-B-Que to the rescue! Thank goodness there was enough propane in the tank. We've never roasted a whole bird on the bar-bi before but it went well with the improvised metal roasting pan out of aluminum foil. Of course it meant xlorp had to sit outside in the dark tending the grill while I waved to him from the kitchen from time to time.

The cats were not amused. I am, however, hoping that we might get a new stove out of all of this. The one that came with the house was very cheap and doesn't heat very well.

I am grateful for such awesome friends!

And to those of you not celabrating turkey ham, happy regular day!

PIE UPDATE: As it turned out, I needed both potatoes for the pie, and they ended up being boiled. But man oh man. I haven't tasted the finished result (which is lovely!), but I could have eaten the pie filling all by itself! It should be pretty tasty.

Anyway. A good day to all. May there be a large ham in your not-to-distant future if not today.
